Visa Crunch

A Complete Guide For Indian Students Who Wish To Study Abroad As International Borders Open

In the midst of the present pandemic, overseas study remains an appealing option for Indian students. Germany, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, and Australia continue to be popular study-abroad destinations due to the high level of education and post-study employment prospects.

The majority of these countries have begun to welcome international students with varying degrees of limitations. Before travelling to any of these destinations, you must now provide a negative Covid-19 test result (taken within 72 hours of departure) to the airline. Below are the most recent updates on the accepted vaccines, travel plans, visa and immigration rules, and part-time employment opportunities in each of these countries:

  • Germany

A national visa has to be applied by the candidate at the first sight, commonly known as a D Visa, which is only valid for three months but permits you to enter Germany and apply for a residence visa. The validity of the permit is one year, although it can be extended or renewed based on the length of the course. Several jobs are available to international students in Germany which they can look for like teaching assistants, tutors, or lab assistants.

Germany has reinstated international flights from India as of September 19, 2021. The only accepted vaccine for Indian travellers in Germany is Covishield. Passengers should note that 14 days should have passed since the second dose at the time of departure.

  • The USA

Indian students who have been accepted to a recognized US university for a course beginning on or after August 1, 2021, are permitted to enter the nation 30 days prior to the start of the course. In recent months, the United States has issued a record number of student visas (F or M) to Indian students. F1 visa holders are only permitted to work on campus in occupations such as teaching assistant, campus tour guide, and library monitor.

The rules are rigorous, and any illicit work may result in deportation. Flights to the United States are permitted from India. Only Air India, however, now operates direct flights between the two countries.

The vaccination policies vary from university to university and as of now proof of vaccination is not required for departure or arrival in the United States. The United States intends to make immunization (including Covishield) compulsory for visitors entering the country beginning in November.

  • Canada

Students who want to study in Canada must apply for a study permit. They will be issued a student visa after their permit is accepted. Customer service representatives, delivery people, storekeepers, and on-campus research assistants are among the occupations available to Indian students in Canada. Since September 27, 2021, direct flights from India to Canada have resumed. Students who have been properly immunized with Covishield are free from quarantine upon arrival.

  • The UK

Tier-4 visa is being given to Indian students. The UK has removed India from the black list which has made the flight operations between the two nations resume. Indians who are fully immunized with Covishield or any other UK- approved vaccine do not need to be quarantined after arriving in the UK on October 11, as per the recent update.

The UK government recently launched the graduate route visa, which allows students to return to the country and hunt for work for at least two years after graduation.

  • Australia

Despite the fact that international flights have begun, Australia is now not permitting Indian students to travel to the continent. As a result, Indian students who were admitted to Australian universities this year have yet to get firm start dates.

Following the approval of Covishield by its health authorities, the Australian government has stated that it “looks forward to hosting Indian students.” International students in Australia can work part-time on and off-campus in industries such as retail and grocery stores, courier services, warehouses, and cafes.

  • Singapore

A Student’s Pass is required in Singapore, which you can apply for after receiving an admission letter from any of the 34 Singapore universities designated as IHL (Institute of Higher Learning). University-approved internships in Singapore linked to their study are permitted for students.

Indian students are required to take approval from SafeTravel Online Portal in order to travel to Singapore. They can only enter Singapore with approval from immigration officials and the Ministry of Education of Singapore. All travellers have to quarantine upon arrival and must also file a health declaration before they travel.
