Top 4 Scholarships For International Students To Study In France At Low Or No Cost

International students should study in France for a variety of reasons. According to Campus France data, the country hosted 358,000 international students as of 2020, and it’s easy to see why.

The modern European country is home to world-famous landmarks and historical architecture, including the Palace of Versailles and the Eiffel Tower. It has some of the best European cuisines and is well-known for its avant-garde fashion. Four of its universities are ranked among the top 100 in the QS World University Rankings for 2022, and many of them offer a diverse range of programmes that attract international students to study in France.

International students can even study in France for free or at a substantially reduced tuition rate thanks to a plethora of scholarships. With that said, here are four scholarships for international students to study in France for free or at a reduced cost.

  1. Université Paris-Saclay International Master’s Scholarships

This merit-based scholarship assists high-achieving international students in continuing their education in France by enrolling in a master’s programme at Université Paris-Saclay.

Scholarship coverage: Valid for one to two years of study, and successful applicants will receive 10,000 euros per year, paid for by Université Paris-Saclay over a ten-month period (from September to June). Furthermore, depending on their country of origin, the scholarship recipient may be entitled to a maximum of €1,000 for travel and visa expenses, and laureates will only receive the scholarship and travel expenses upon arrival in France. In addition, they must confirm their enrollment at the university. This scholarship has a deadline of April 28, 2022.

  • The Foreign Minister Scholarship

The Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs provides French government scholarships to international students who want to study, train, or learn a language in France.

The Cooperation and Cultural Action Departments (SCAC) in French embassies and consulates award the vast majority of these scholarships. As a result, before submitting an application, international applicants must check with their local French embassy or consulate to obtain the necessary scholarship information, including eligibility and application requirements, as well as the selection timeline. The scholarship is divided into several categories, including training grants, high-level science scholarships, and study scholarships. Individual programs may also entitle applicants to a scholarship through the Paris services of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs.

  • The Ministry of Higher Education scholarships

Scholarships are awarded to international students by the Ministry of Higher Education based on social criteria, which may differ depending on their country of origin or social situation. This government body’s scholarships include financial support from countries eligible for the HOPES (Higher and Further Education Opportunities and Perspectives for Syrians) project, which focuses on improving the conditions of Syrian refugees and people in vulnerable situations.

The CROUS scholarship is another scholarship that is awarded based on social criteria. The eligibility and application requirements for this scholarship, as well as the timeline for selection, vary.

  • The Erasmus + Mobility Scholarship for Foreign Students

Erasmus+ is a mobility scholarship programme that provides international students with the opportunity to study in one of the European Union’s member countries. It is concerned with education, training, youth, and sports.

The Erasmus Mundus scholarship, in particular, provides international students with up to two years of funding to study in France in one of the master’s programmes supported by selected higher education institutions. More information is available here.

While the deadline for 2022-2023 applications has passed, international students should plan to apply for the Erasmus Mundus scholarship between October 2022 and January 2023. Erasmus+ also provides mobility programmes for students to travel to and from France, which cover transportation and lodging costs. Inquiries can be directed to the institutions that accept this scholarship.
