Steady Decline Of Indian Students At Australian Universities: Researchers

According to analysts, the percentage of Indian students studying in Australian universities has plummeted in 2021. Anna Boucher and Elisa Choy discovered that travel limitations, underpayment in the labour market, and the quality of education in the country are some of the reasons for the drop in the number of Indian students seeking higher education in Australia.

India has long been one of the most important senders of international students in Australia, second only to China. Indian students make for 21% of international student entries, according to the Australian Strategy for International Education 2021-2030 study.

According to the Australian Department of Education, 2,500 Indian students began studying in Australia last year, which came down to 83 per cent from the same period in 2019.

According to the media reports, Indian students delivered 6.6 billion Australian dollars to the Australian economy in 2019/20. Education websites like Kanan International, Collegify, ForeignAdmits, Yocket, and Leverage Edu, on the other hand, have reported that the number of Indian students planning to study abroad has increased since 2021.

More applicants have submitted applications as a result of these platforms highlighting the wage packages and opportunities offered by popular tech businesses at campus recruitment campaigns.

Yet another study, ‘Education Overseas–An Evolving Journey,’ commissioned by Western Union and conducted by NielsenIQ, indicated that for 52 per cent of Indian students interested in studying overseas, specialized courses are more essential than university reputation.

According to the media reports, qualifying tests are a barrier for 64% of students; as a result, these students have looked into countries or organizations that do not necessitate entrance exams or English proficiency.

As per the statistics, increasing Indian students are considering the following study destinations in addition to the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia:

  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Ireland
  • Turkey
  • Russia
  • China
  • Spain

As per the statistics, increasing Indian students are considering the following study destinations in addition to the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia:

According to Ravi Singh, Managing Director of Global Reach, an organization that focuses on the recruitment of South Asian students to colleges around the world, the number of students from numerous countries, including India, has decreased.

“Even though we are recognized in the market as an Australian education specialist, the interest even amongst our pipeline students seem to be changing for the destinations that are open: UK, Canada, and the US,” said Singh.

Due to severe border restrictions imposed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, Australia has experienced a large decline in the number of international students; as a result, many international students are now eyeing the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada as study destinations.
