Visa Crunch

Power Of Canadian Passport Increases According To A New Index

According to a new index, the Canadian passport is currently at a better rank than passports from other nations for those who want to travel visa-free.

On January 11, Henley & Partners ranked the Canadian passport as seventh most desirable in the organization’s first-quarter ranking of passports from around the world. That’s a step up from the Canadian passport’s ranking in 2021.

The Henley Passport Index, which is updated quarterly, compares 199 passports for 227 travel locations and assigns a ranking to the top 111 that represents the global mobility allowed by those nations’ passports. Canadian passport holders can travel visa-free to 185 countries, including 48 that only require a visa upon arrival.

Canada’s passport received a score of 185 in this category, placing it among passports from Australia, the Czech Republic, Greece, and Malta. With a score of 186, the American passport narrowly beat out Canada’s, which was shared by New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Singapore and Japan’s passports appear to be the most potent, ranking top with scores of 192. Germany and South Korea are in the second position with a score of 190, followed by Finland, Italy, Luxembourg, and Spain, all of whom have a score of 189.

Afghanistan’s passport obtained a score of only 26 in the rating of the nation’s passports. Canada is frequently included among the countries with the most powerful passports in the world. Visa-free travel is regarded as an indicator of a country’s inhabitants’ independence.

Holders of visa-exempt passports must get an Electronic Travel Authorization in advance of their flight into Canada. It costs $7 CAD and is available online.

Dual citizenship is certainly very widespread in Canada, with nearly one in every twenty Canadians owning more than one passport, yet it is probably not as well understood as it might be.

Although the Canadian government does not issue a certificate or recognize dual citizenship, foreign persons from 49 nations can become Canadian citizens while maintaining their citizenship in their native countries. Keeping one’s original citizenship can be a huge help in a variety of situations, involving travel.

When a Canadian possesses dual citizenship in the country to which he or she is travelling, the requirement for a visitor’s visa is eliminated. A Canadian with dual citizenship can travel to his or her other nation without having to wait weeks or months for a visa. It’s a fantastic bonus.

Another factor to bear in mind is that even dual Canadian citizens must display their Canadian passports when flying to Canada. The lone exception to this regulation is dual citizenship between the United States and Canada.

Dual citizens are also required by law to obey all rules pertaining to military duty, funding the public school system, and paying taxes. Becoming a citizen of more than one nation might also be a challenge for anyone seeking to work for the government of either country in a position requiring a high-level security clearance.
