City in Focus – St. Andrews

St. Andrews is a small town located in Scotland, particularly known for its small population and beautiful countryside. It is also home to the University of St. Andrews, which is a very highly ranked institution in the United Kingdom, with 47% of its students being of international status. 3 beaches surround St. Andrews, providing beautiful views and peaceful sunrises. The small town means that it’s easy to become part of the community, while international students will get an authentic glimpse into Scottish traditions and culture. Something that all students would definitely want to try is golf, the town being the birthplace of the sport. Boo! For lovers of traditions and horror stories, there are quite a few spots around town and near the university, which have grisly tales to tell. The St. Andrews castle and East Sands Beach offer amazing views and make for a refreshing scenic getaway. One of the best aspects of living in a small town like St. Andrews is the low cost of living and tight-knit community.

While much focus is garnered upon universities such as University College of London and the London School of Economics and Political Sciences, which are located in London, the United Kingdom has many more options for students. One such example is the University of St. Andrews, located in the town of St. Andrews.

The University of St. Andrews was founded in 1413 and can be said to be Scotland’s pride, being the oldest and highest-ranking university in the region. Ranking in the top 100 of the QS world rankings, the University is particularly ranked for its Philosophy, and Theology and Divinity studies courses. The university has a student body of about 9224 students, a quite small number compared to the other universities we viewed earlier. For students looking for personalised education and a close-knit community, this university is ideal for them. However, a small student body does not mean that it is any less diverse, with about 183 countries being represented on campus, the University of St. Andrews is one of the most internationally diverse universities in Scotland. On the extra-curricular front, there are a plethora of student societies, almost 180!
