China: The Sole Country That Is Still Not Allowing Entry To International Students

According to China Admissions, China is now the only country actively prohibiting overseas students from entering its borders as of March.

The site, created by CEO Richard Coward, employs a traffic light system to highlight how countries’ restrictions affect students who are currently attempting to enter the countries.

“We have checked every country and region, and China is now the only one in the world not allowing students to return, and not offering any kind of return plan,” Coward said.

As of now, no public notification has been made by China’s Ministry of Education or any other government organization regarding when students would be authorized to enter China. Students appear to be allowed in university by university and country by country so far. As evidenced by the tweet from a Chinese embassy employee, there has been some consideration of students.

Just a few international students from Juilliard in New York, students from NYU Shanghai, and some postgraduate Schwarzman Scholarship students from Tsinghua University are permitted to attend. Students from NYU Shanghai will be eligible to return in 2020 as well. Students from Malaysia, Russia, Pakistan, Singapore, and India have been informed that they may be able to return soon.

Unfortunately, no specific dates have been set. It is still unknown where students will be quarantined and who would bear the costs. Saifuddin Abdullah, Malaysia’s foreign minister, stated in late 2021 that the country is one of a few “priority countries” in a pilot effort to return international students to China.

Students are still waiting for any updates on the situation, and for some, the interminable wait has ruined their experience. One student, who requested anonymity, explained that their absence from China as a result of the ban meant that the dormitory he was staying in was given away and their stuff “cleaned away,” including essential personal documents.

An Indian student informed the Times of India that they were concerned that the prohibition might result in their degrees being revoked totally by Chinese universities. According to The Times of India, students have completed their courses but have failed to complete the obligatory internships required to practice in India.

The only current information uncovered to imply any kind of Chinese government movement was supplied by a consul from the Chinese Embassy in Lebanon, allegedly from the Chinese foreign minister. The foreign minister will unveil a strategy this year to make overseas travel safer, healthier, and more convenient, according to the tweet.

Many people responded to the tweet by saying that the information is “vague,” that students have been waiting for “two years,” and that “all we want is a date.” Throughout the pandemic, international students have been pressing for a timetable for their return to China.

The National Medical Commission of India also advised students not to apply to institutions in China this year, citing a lack of information from the authorities. Despite the continued travel prohibition, certain Chinese medical institutes were seeking applications for MBBS programs, according to the announcement. Pakistani students have also pleaded with their country’s prime leader, Imran Khan, to help them return to China.

The announcement comes as students who have been waiting to enter Japan begin to make their way there, following the announcement that a cap on entry would be abolished and overseas students’ return to the country will be prioritized.
