It has been recently announced that as of July 5, fully vaccinated Canadian individuals who test negative for the coronavirus will not be subjected to a two-week quarantine while returning to the country, according to officials.
To qualify for the exemption, Canadians and permanent residents must be completely vaccinated 14 days or more prior to their arrival.
Officials said people travelling must have two doses of a vaccination approved by Canada, a negative coronavirus test from 72 hours before arrival, a second test upon arrival, and a quarantine plan in place if the arrival test is positive.
The first wave of border-easing measures, according to Public Safety Minister Bill Blair, would continue to limit entrance to Canada for foreign people seeking to enter for non-essential reasons.
A flight restriction between Canada and India will stay in effect until July 21, while a flying embargo with Pakistan will be lifted, according to Transport Minister Omar Alghabra. The flight prohibitions were implemented in response to an uptick in coronavirus infections caused by the extremely infectious Delta variety, which was originally discovered in India.
Fully vaccinated Canadian travellers who want to be considered for the exemption from quarantine and reduce testing requirements will have to provide proof of their vaccination status by uploading supporting documentation into the ArriveCAN app or signing in the government website, as suggested by the government.
The government is doing away with the requirement that fully vaccinated Canadians and permanent residents who fly into the nation spend three days quarantining in an approved hotel.
Canadians returning home over the land border must quarantine for 14 days at home or elsewhere, and those arriving by plane must quarantine for up to three days at a government-mandated hotel while waiting for a COVID test to come back negative. After their hotel stay, air passengers must be quarantined at home or elsewhere.
Before recommending that border restrictions be relaxed for tourists and business visitors who aren’t citizens or permanent residents, officials have stated that they would prefer 75% of eligible Canadian people to be completely vaccinated.
By the end of July, the Canadian government hopes to have enough vaccines to fully vaccinate 80% of eligible Canadians.
All non-essential travel between Canada and the US is prohibited. The limitations were first announced in March 2020, during the early months of the epidemic, and have subsequently been extended every month.
The government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Friday that border restrictions on non-essential travel to the US have been extended until July 21 as Canada strives to increase the number of Canadians who have received complete vaccinations. The decision was reached in consultation with the US.
