As stated by Immigration, Refugees and, Citizenship, Canada (IRCC), the Parents and Grandparents program, 2020 is taking in and reviewing the applications of interested sponsors who want to sponsor their parents and grandparents for immigration to Canada. The intake window will be from 13th October to 3rd November 2020. About 10,000 applications will be accepted by the IRCC.
PGP is a boon for citizens and permanent residents of Canada who are provided this opportunity to reunite with their loved ones and support them in their old age. Parents and grandparents who are sponsored can attain all the PR benefits and have full access to healthcare services and have the ability to work.
PGP also has various benefits for Canadian society. Research suggests that most sponsored parents and grandparents work and earn after immigrating to Canada and add it to their family income. This indirectly boosts Canada’s economy. Parents and grandparents also provide attention and care to children in the family, which allows other young members in the family to put in more work hours and pursue economic opportunities without worrying about their children’s safety and wellbeing.
Eligibility criteria for Sponsors in the Parents and Grandparents Program 2020:
- Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Living in Canada.
- Exceeding the minimum income.
- Commit to offer Sponsored Family Members Financial Assistance for 20 years, to repay any social assistance paid to the sponsored family members for 20 years.
Sponsors must submit a Canadian Revenue Service (CRA) valuation announcement to prove that they meet their income requirements. If they live in a state or region other than Quebec, they need to show their income for the last three tax years, but if they live in Quebec, they only need one year.
They can have a spouse or relationship partner as a co-signer to meet their income requirements, but they must meet eligibility criteria and follow a 20-year business period. The purpose of the business is to be able to provide sponsored families financially.
In the Parents and Grandparents Program, the family size is the number of people in a sponsor’s family and is the number of people the sponsor will be financially responsible for.
If you are a sponsor and want to calculate your family size, count:
- Yourself
- Your spouse or common-law partner.
- Your dependent child (under the age of 22, not married or in a common-law relationship).
- Your spouse or partner’s dependent children.
- Any family members you and your co-signer (if applicable) previously sponsored and for whom you are still financially responsible.
- Parents and grandparents, you want to sponsor and their dependents.
- Dependent children who will not come to Canada with your parents or grandparents.
- Your parents or grandparent’s spouse or partner even if they will not come to Canada.
- Your parents or grandparents’ separated spouse.
