Ukrainian medical institutes have permitted its international students to acquire practical experience at hospitals and clinics in their home countries, providing solace to hundreds of Indian students who have fled the war-torn country.
The universities have also urged foreign governments to give their students actual training opportunities so that they can learn the necessary skills. After being closed owing to the deteriorating security situation in Ukraine as a result of the Russian offensive, universities in the eastern European country have begun offering online classes since last month. However, the main source of concern for international students was developing clinical experience in the lack of practical classes.
To assist such students, various hospitals and private clinics in the area have begun to offer practical classes and internships. The DSMU has asked public institutions in international student’s home countries to “offer medical practise opportunities for university students in public and private clinics in your country during the spring semester 2021/2022 academic year.”
The V N Karazin Kharkiv National University has also sent a letter demanding that governments in other nations enable its students to receive practical training in both private and public institutions.
“We ask local government officials to allow all international students of Ukrainian universities to go through practical works in local private or government hospitals as depends on student’s courses in their country,” the letter read.
According to the university, if students can provide a certificate stating the amount of acquired practical skills, signed by a doctor on a form of a medical institution, it will be deemed practical training for the spring semester of the 2021-2022 academic year. A similar directive was issued by the National Pirogov Memorial University in Vinnytsya. It has notified its students that they have the university’s “complete consent” to receive practical training at hospitals and clinics that are not affiliated with the university and are of their own choosing.
Students said that in the days after the issuance of these instructions, they were approached by numerous local hospitals offering practical training. Furthermore, students at medical universities in Sumy, Ukraine, have asked the institution to give a similar letter permitting them to pursue practical sessions in their home cities.
