As the global economy in a flux, every country is ramping up strategies to encourage the best talent to attract to their shores.
The United States, a long-time favourite among students and technologists, has seen its neighbour, Canada, emerge as the preferred destination for immigrants. The North American nation has been enticing migrants with ease, thanks to a thriving job market, multiple pathways, and affordable education. Throughout, nearly 100,000 Indians became permanent residents of Canada in 2021, as the country accepted a record 405,000 new immigrants.
Canada also has one of the simplest immigration paths for students, thanks to the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Program. Especially over the past month, Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced a new temporary policy that allows recent international graduates with expiring temporary status to extend their stay in order to gain work experience and improve their chances of qualifying for permanent resident status. However, as the world slowly emerges from the pandemic haze, an increasing number of countries are looking to immigrants to fill jobs in their industries, start businesses, and finally settle down.

“Following the pandemic, things are changing. Canada is now facing stiff competition from countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia, particularly in terms of post-graduate job opportunities “According to Akshay Chaturvedi, founder of Leverage Edu.
Better and more lucrative job opportunities, as well as a more direct path to citizenship, are attracting an increasing number of people to these countries, he adds.
In 2021, the United Kingdom implemented the post-study Graduate Route, which allows eligible graduates to stay in the country for up to three years after completing their studies in the UK. This month, it is also expected to introduce a new High Potential Individual (HPI) visa. The new visa path will be aimed at attracting highly skilled foreign university graduates, who will be able to work and stay in the UK for two or three years, depending on their degree level.
Applicants will not need a job offer or sponsorship, and holders of this visa will be able to work, set up as self-employed, and volunteer in the UK. Australia, too, now provides a flexible work visa for recent graduates. Undergraduate students in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane can work for two years, Masters’s students for three years, and Doctoral students for four years.
Students studying in other cities, such as Adelaide, Perth, and Canberra, for example, can extend their work-study visa for up to two years, depending on their location and course of study.
The growing popularity of the Middle East, particularly Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, has been an unexpected trend in the study abroad category. Dubai is home to a number of British and American universities, where students can earn their degrees for a fraction of the price they would pay on campus in the United Kingdom or the United States.
“These campuses are especially popular among Indians looking for global exposure, but are unable to afford the high costs of Europe, and America,” says Chaturvedi. “Lower taxes once you start working also adds to the appeal of these countries.”
