Sponsoring the parents and grandparents of the Canadian permanent residents and citizens has been made easier as IRCC has launched its Parents and Grandparents Program.
Prior this week, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada confirmed details of opening a 2020 eligibility window for the Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP). PGP 2020 will open from October 13 at 12:00 PM EST through November 3 at 12:00 PM EST. During this time, Canadian citizens and permanent residents can apply for sponsorship forms on the IRCC website. The IRCC then randomly selects potential sponsors and invites them to apply. The IRCC will accept up to 10,000 applications for the PGP 2020. It declared it will open another admission period in 2021 and will acknowledge up to 30,000 applications one year from now. If IRCC invites a candidate after November 3rd, the candidate will have 60 days to submit a full sponsorship application.
Eligibility criteria for Sponsors in the Parents and Grandparents Program 2020:
- Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or registered Indians under the Canadian Indian Act;
- Be at least 18 years old;
- Live in Canada;
- Exceeding the minimum income.
- Commit to offer Sponsored Family Members Financial Assistance for 20 years, to repay any social assistance paid to the sponsored family members for 20 years and if the sponsor lives in Quebec, they must sign an additional commitment with Quebec.
Sponsors must submit a Canadian Revenue Service (CRA) valuation announcement to prove that they meet their income requirements. If they live in a state or region other than Quebec, they need to show their income for the last three tax years, but if they live in Quebec, they only need one year.
They can have a spouse or relationship partner as a co-signer to meet their income requirements, but they must meet eligibility criteria and follow a 20-year business period. The purpose of the business is to be able to provide sponsored families financially.
In the Parents and Grandparents program, the family size is the number of people in a sponsor’s family and is the number of people the sponsor will be financially responsible for.
If you are a sponsor and want to calculate your family size, count:
- Yourself
- Your spouse or common-law partner.
- Your dependent child (under the age of 22, not married or in a common-law relationship).
- Your spouse or partner’s dependent children.
- Any family members you and your co-signer (if applicable) previously sponsored and for whom you are still financially responsible.
- Parents and grandparents you want to sponsor and their dependents.
- Dependent children who will not come to Canada with your parents or grandparents.
- Your parents or grandparent’s spouse or partner even if they will not come to Canada.
- Your parents or grandparents’ separated spouse.
