For many students considering studying in Europe, the cost is a big consideration. International students typically pay twice or three times as much as domestic students, however, scholarships might provide some relief. There are hundreds of options throughout Europe, but one that you might want to look into is the Holland scholarship.
Although Germany, France, and Italy are all formidable candidates, the Netherlands should not be overlooked.
Major reasons to consider while applying to the Netherlands:
- Cultural diversity
The Netherlands is surrounded by the United Kingdom, Belgium, and Germany, therefore it is no surprise that Dutch society is diverse and inclusive. Its foreign students come from over 160 different countries, and they provide a variety of English-taught degrees. Dutch and English are both extensively spoken here (English is spoken by 95% of the people), so students who are fluent in either language will feel quite at home.
- Affordable Tuition
University tuition in the Netherlands is quite low. According to Study in Holland, the average tuition fee for non-EU students for bachelor’s programs ranges between €6,000 and €15,000, and for master’s programs ranges between €8,000 and €20,000. If students can’t pay the tuition, major Dutch institutions offer grants and scholarships to deserving students, such as the Holland scholarship.
- Affordable Living
Housing costs vary based on where you live. A typical room could cost between €300 and €600 per month, depending on where you study, what is included in the rent, and the arrangements made by the school. According to a Dutch study, housing in Amsterdam is more expensive than in smaller towns like Enschede. In total, students may anticipate spending between €800 and €1,100 each month. International students might seek part-time jobs to aid with living expenses.
The Holland Scholarship
Non-EEA international students pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in the Netherlands are eligible for the Holland Scholarship. Students will receive €5,000 for the first year of their studies, thanks to funding from the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science and various Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences.
International students should keep in mind that each student can only get the Holland scholarship once to cover their first year’s annual tuition charge.
