Travel between India and Canada will be made easier now that Ottawa has abolished India-specific Covid-19 testing restrictions that were making the procedure difficult.
The Canadian government’s travel advice for India has been updated, and the necessary necessity for acquiring a negative RT-PCR test prior to boarding from a single laboratory located at Delhi airport has been removed. The rules that apply to travellers flying from India to Canada will be the same as those that apply to all travellers.
Due to the constraints imposed by the Omicron form of Covid-19, a negative RT-PCR test result will still be required prior to boarding, however, this can now be obtained from an Indian Council of Medical Research-recognized facility.
Travel to Canada is only permitted for fully vaccinated passengers, while both vaccinations used in India, Covishield and Covaxin, are now recognised for travel purposes in Canada. Travellers from India would also not be required to obtain a negative test result from a third nation before flying to Canada if they are connecting.
Passengers travelling in Canada may also be subjected to Covid-19 testing at random. Previously, the travel advisory for India restricted pre-departure testing to a single laboratory of the company Genestrings located at Delhi International Airport.
Travellers were required to give a negative test result before being allowed to board for any Canadian destination, making the process difficult for those connecting through Delhi, as taking the test and receiving the results might take up to several hours. That test has to be completed within 18 hours of the scheduled departure time.
