According to Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab, a pilot provincial immigration stream is anticipated to fill Nova Scotia’s labour needs in the continuing care and early childhood education sectors.
According to a document issued by the province that specifies qualifying criteria and application processes, the International Graduates in Demand immigration stream began as a trial in April 2021 and is scheduled to operate for three years.
To advertise the stream to students, graduates, and businesses, the province made an announcement outside Mount Saint Vincent University on Wednesday. The stream is accessible to foreign students who have recently completed programmes at Nova Scotia Community College or private vocational schools and universities in Nova Scotia.
The applicant’s programmes and skill set should fall into one of the two categories below:
A spokesperson, “These two occupations were chosen because we know from labour market data and feedback from employers that there is high demand for them in Nova Scotia.”
Before seeking to immigrate to Nova Scotia under the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP), international graduates had to have one year of work experience, but this stream removed that requirement.
Before applying to the new stream, applicants must have a full-time permanent employment offer from a Nova Scotia company in a position that corresponds to one of the qualifying categories. Before giving the employment to the applicant, employers must show that they attempted to recruit a Canadian citizen or permanent resident for the position.
The programme is one of nine NSNP streams in which the province chooses candidates whose skill set fits the demands of the Nova Scotia labour market. In 2020, the province nominated 1,900 candidates through NSNP, accounting for more than half of the province’s total authorised applications.
