This year has been quite eventful for the Canadian immigration system. First of all, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, immigration rates declined to an all-time low, yet Canada kept holding a bi-weekly Express entry draw and various Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) draws from September. Canada has broken its previous record by inviting a whopping 5000 immigrants to apply for permanent residence in a single Express Entry draw.
This year has seen the highest level of candidates to be invited to apply for their permanent residence. Even in the month of December, Canada is set to hold at least two more Express Entry draw and some provinces might hold PNP draws.
Some of the key updates are also expected to be introduced by Immigration, Refugees and, Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in December.
The major updates are as follow:
1. Mandate Letter: Immigration Minister of Canada, Marco Mendicino is expected to submit a Mandate letter to Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau before Christmas. Mandate letter from the immigration minister will provide details about the immigration plans of Canada for the next year. Canada’s immigration priorities will consist of implementing the 2021-2023 Immigration Levels Plan and may include various new initiatives such as removing Canadian citizenship fees and introducing new immigration pathways to meet the immigration goals.
2. Express Entry: Canada has already invited a record-breaking 92,000 immigration candidates to apply for their permanent residence in 2020 via the Express Entry system. In the month of December, two more Express Entry draws are expected after which the total immigration candidates to apply for their permanent residence in Canada is expected to be more than 100,000 in 2020. This is a feat Canada has never achieved since the introduction of Express Entry in the year 2015.
3. Provincial Nominee Program (PNP): Various PNP draws are expected to be held in the month of December by provinces like Prince Edward Island, British Columbia, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Nova Scotia.
4. Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) draw: Canada is expected to hold the PGP 2020 draw in the month of December as it had accepted the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) Interest to Sponsor forms in October and closed it in November. In 2020, IRCC is expecting to invite around 10,000 sponsors to apply to sponsor parents and grandparents for Canadian immigration.
5. Introduction of new immigration pathways for temporary residents: Canada’s Immigration Minister has recently stated in a media interview that there is a high possibility of introducing new immigration pathways for Canada’s temporary residents who wish to change their status to permanent residents. This will help Canada to make up for the low immigration rate caused by the pandemic in 2020
