This year, the Coronavirus pandemic has caused a lot of immigration problems in Canada. The major problems caused by the Covid-19 are the steep decline in immigration rates and the new permanent residence intake rate.
This September, Canada updated the status of 15 thousand immigrants to permanent residents of Canada which is quite low compared to the permanent residence intake rate of September 2019, in which around 35 thousand people obtained their permanent residence.
In 2020, Canada is expected to fall short of its initial goal of welcoming 200,000 immigrants as in between the months of January and September, Canada has welcomed around 140,000 immigrants, whereas, in 2019, Canada had welcomed 264,000 immigrants between January and September and over 341,000 immigrants in total in the year 2019.
Even though due to the pandemic, Canada has not been able to achieve its immigration target but has stated time and again that immigration still remains Canada’s top priority.
In October, Canada’s immigration minister Marco Mendicino solidified the view on how important immigration is for Canada as he announced that Canada would be increasing its immigration targets from next year to balance the decline in immigration that took place this year.
In the new 2021-2023 Immigration Levels Plan announced by Mendicino, Canada will be welcoming over 400,000 immigrants per year till 2023, which will be the record-breaking levels in the history of Canada.
IRCC has been holding express entry draws every two weeks since September to achieve the required immigration target. The two most recent Express Entry draws have seen 5000 and 4500 invitations to apply for permanent residence issued in each draw.
Canada has also been holding the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) draws to welcome immigration candidates according to every province’s labor market requirements. Canada’s provinces have already issued nearly 3,000 provincial nominations in just a month of October.
