Isolating when you may have been exposed to COVID-19 – Canada

The Government of Canada has established certain guidelines for all residents, permanent or temporary, who feel or know that they may have been exposed to a person infected with the COVID-19 virus. These guidelines have been put in place to primarily prevent further spreading of the virus, and to ensure that other highly vulnerable individuals are not put at risk. These are the recommendations:

Primarily, it is advised that individuals stay home, or return to their home if: they have received a test result affirming that they have contracted the virus; are awaiting results for a COVID-19 test; show any symptom of COVID-19 after being in contact with another individual who is suspected or confirmed of having been exposed to the virus or are advised through public communication that they have been exposed to COVID-19. If any of the above scenarios apply, then individuals are advised to monitor their health and contact their health provider or Public Health Authority if the individual’s condition worsens.

It is also strongly advised to limit contact with others, and to not leave your home under most circumstances where it is not required, nor to visit public places and avail public transportation. For students who might be living in shared accommodation, it is strongly recommended that they isolate in their own bathroom and use a separate bathroom from others in the home. It is imperative to not come in contact with high-risk individuals such as the elderly, who may develop worse symptoms if exposed.

Moreover, is absolutely vital that the individual wears a mask whenever in contact with others in the household, or elsewhere, and if no medical masks are available, use a face-covering made according to the WHO guidelines.

Keeping personal hygiene by washing hands frequently, or using a sanitizer containing a minimum of 60 per cent alcohol and avoiding contamination within the home can prevent further infection of other individuals.

Monitoring of your own health is paramount and keep vigilant for developing symptoms such as a new cough, difficulty experienced while breathing, running a temperature above 38 degrees Celsius, feeling other symptoms commonly attributed to the flu, such as headaches and chills.

It is also advisable to have certain supplies at home when isolating, such as,

  • Medical Masks, and if not available, facial coverings made according to health authority guidelines
  • Face-shield or any other eye protection
  • Disposable paper towels and tissues
  • Plastic liners for wastebaskets
  • Thermometers
  • Medication to reduce fever
  • Hand soaps and Alcohol-based sanitizers containing a minimum 60% alcohol
  • Dish soap
  • Regular household cleaning products and laundry soap
  • Wipes for electronics.
