According to new research from the National Foundation for American Policy, the number of Indian students pursuing Master’s and Engineering programs in the United States fell by nearly 40% between 2016 and 2019, while the overall number of Indian students in Canadian colleges and universities increased by 182 percent during the same time period.
Canada has rapidly become a popular destination for Indians looking for chances abroad, both for school and for employment after graduation. According to a recent study conducted by the National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP), the number of Indians who became permanent residents in Canada surged by 115% between 2016 and 2020 and 2021.
In terms of study, Indian students in Master’s level science and engineering programs in the United States decreased by roughly 40% between 2016 and 2019, but Indian students climbed by 182 percent at Canadian colleges and universities between 2016 and 2019.
According to an NFAP analysis of government data, the number of international students from India enrolled in master’s level science and engineering programs at US universities decreased by nearly 40% (or 31,800) between the 2016-17 and 2019-20 academic years, whereas international students from India studying at Canadian colleges and universities increased 182 percent between 2016 and 2019. This demonstrates how much easier it is for international students to obtain temporary visas and permanent residence in Canada after graduating than in the United States.
“Canada has made it much easier than the United States for international students to work and become permanent residents,” said NFAP Executive Director Stuart Anderson.
The post-graduation work permit (PGWP) is often regarded as the first significant step in gaining permanent residency status. Canada is profiting from a diversion of young Indian tech professionals from US destinations, owing to the difficulties in getting and renewing H-1B visas, as well as finding a viable path to US permanent residence.
The Canadian government has made it easier for businesses to acquire and retain talent. The nation is expanding its immigration program to admit a larger number of new permanent residents, which implies that there will be more opportunities for overseas students to stay in the country after graduating from Canadian institutions of higher learning.
Altogether, the Canadian government plans to welcome 431,645 permanent residents in 2022, 447,055 in 2023, and 451,000 in 2024, as described in the 2022-2024 Immigration Levels Plan. More than 405,000 people from all around the world will become permanent citizens in 2021, the most ever welcomed in a single year in Canadian history.
H-1B visas are critical in the United States because they are often the only realistic method for highly educated foreign people, especially overseas students, to work long-term in the country. Furthermore, numerical limitations on high-skilled temporary visas prevent the great majority of foreign-born candidates from working in the United States in any one year.
According to the survey, international student enrollment at US universities fell by 7% between 2016 and 2019 but surged by 52% at Canadian colleges and universities.
