Despite the ongoing war in Ukraine, travelling to Spain and Portugal from the United Kingdom is completely safe. International travellers can travel to these two countries from the UK without worrying about their safety.
Europe and Russia have closed their airspace for one another for quite some time now. However, travel to Spain and Portugal from the UK remains unaffected as the route between the UK and Spain as well as the route between the UK and Portugal is geographically on the opposite part of the region.
While travellers from the UK can reach Spain and Portugal without having to worry about their safety, everyone still needs to meet the COVID-19 restrictions that the two countries currently have. Spain currently requires all Britons over the age of 17 to present a valid vaccination or recovery certificate upon their arrival.
A vaccination certificate is considered valid when entering Spain only if it proves that the holder has completed vaccination with one of the approved vaccine doses within the last 270 days or if the holder has received an additional vaccine dose.
As for the recovery certificate, the Spanish authorities have explained that they recognised this type of document as long as it indicates that the holder recovered from the virus in the last 180 days.
Differently from adults, children between 12 and 17 can enter Spain without holding a vaccination or recovery pass as long as they present a negative COVID-19 test taken recently.
Apart from the above-mentioned requirements, travellers from the UK also need to fill in a Health Control Form before entering Spain. Unlike Spain, Portugal currently applies more relaxed rules for travellers from the UK.
Travellers from the UK are allowed to enter Portugal for all kinds of purposes as long as they present a valid vaccination, recovery, or test certificate upon entry as well as fill in the Passenger Locator Form.
Portugal has the same rules as Spain regarding the validity of vaccination and recovery certificates. A vaccination pass must be issued within the last 270 days, and a recovery pass must be issued within the last 180 days.
As for the negative COVID-19 test result, Portugal accepts both PCR and rapid antigen tests. The PCR test must be taken within 72 hours before arrival in Portugal, whereas the rapid antigen test must be taken within 24 hours before arrival.
Travel to other European countries is safe too, and travel experts are pushing for the recovery of the travel and tourism sector.
In spite of the current situation in Ukraine, the EU countries need to be economically strong in order to support incoming refugees, thus suggesting that the recovery of the tourism and travel sector would benefit everyone and not only for those who wish to spend some good spring and summer days outside their country.
“Once the tourism sector fully recovers, not only will these workers get back to work, but there will also be new workplaces for the refugees so that they can work while waiting for the war to end,” the experts asserted.
In addition, the experts also claim that there is no reason to postpone or cancel any trips to the EU.
