India: 80.3% of international students are enrolled in 16 programs

According to figures provided by the Indian government earlier this month, just 16 types of programs account for more than 80% of international student registration in India, with B.Tech degrees accounting for more than 20% of students.

According to the 10th edition of the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE), there were 49,427 the previous year. The international students are from 168 different nations across the world.

Sudan (3.6%), the US (3.3%), Nigeria (3.1%), Yemen (2.9%), Malaysia (2.7%), and the UAE are among the top 10 nations with the most students (2.7%). Except for the US and Malaysia, the number of male students from these top 10 nations outnumbered the number of female students. In India, about three out of every four international students were undergraduates, 16.6% were postgraduates, and 9.1% were studying at other levels.

When looking at the state-by-state breakdown, it can be observed that Karnataka has the greatest number of international students, with 10,231.

Despite government initiatives such as the introduction of Study in India in 2018, the number of international students in India has remained stable, growing by a little over 10,000 from 2013/14 to last year. “India ranks as the second-largest higher education system, with 45,000 institutions and 950 universities,” according to Study in Indian. It has, however, long been regarded as a source of students rather than a destination.

Kerala University recently reported that it has received a record of 1,042 student applications for the next academic year despite the pandemic. “The majority of applications are from Afghanistan and Iraq, and the admission is sought primarily for Ph.D. courses in both cases,” Sabu Joseph, head of the university’s Centre for Global Academics, stated.

International students have continued to be attracted to study in India. It hosted the five-day Study in India Expo 2021 online in June, which included over 45 local universities and drew over 4,000 visitors from 77 countries, according to the company.

Sanjeev Bolia, founder and managing director of AFAIRS Exhibition and Media, one of the event organisers, stated, “ It allowed students to engage with major colleges and organisations over five days.”

“The time has come for all of us to work together to make India one of the top destinations for foreign students to fully realize the potential of our vast Indian education network in attracting international students. In these challenging times, we need to work together.”
