EU Digital COVID Certificate Revocation Feature Activated; EU Member State Will Know When Certificate Are Revoked

The European Union Member States will now be able to know when another Member State revokes an EU Digital COVID Certificate due to a new feature that has been introduced to the system.

According to a press release of the EU Commission issued on Monday, March 21, the same has adopted an EU mechanism that enables the relevant authorities in the Member States to annul fraudulent or erroneous EU Digital COVID Certificates.

“With this measure, once a certificate is revoked in one Member State, it will also show as invalid in the other Member States,” the press release highlights.

The move has been taken due to the frequent cases of people attempting to use a fake COVID certificate to access areas that are accessible only with such a document, as well as due to a number of certificates issued legally but containing mistakes.

According to the EU Commission, a total of 1.7 billion EU Digital COVID Certificates have been issued so far. Connected to it are the 27 EU Member States and another five other countries, including here the non-EU Schengen Members – Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.

The certificate has often been praised as the most successful initiative towards the reopening of borders, not only by EU officials but also international travel organisations like the World Travel and Tourism Council and the International Air Transport Association.

On March 11, the Council of the EU has approved the extension of the certificate for another year, until June 2023. Aside from the new revocation feature, several other changes have been introduced to it, including here making it possible to include all doses in a vaccination certificate, regardless of the country where they were performed.

Yet, some 70 public and private travel and tourism organisations have urged for more changes to it in order to restore the freedom of movement within the bloc more swiftly.
